Follow-up etiquette

(1/1)

GreenEyedHawk:
What's standard procedure for follow-up after an interview?  Anthony's finding it difficult to find a balance.  Doing a follow-up call too soon seems desperate; doing a follow-up call too late or not at all seems to me to give the impression of indifference.

What's the best way to deal with this?  Is there some kind of rule of thumb to follow?

LazyDaisy:
During the interview, he should ask when they expect to make a decision. It's not a rude question and shows his interest in the job. Their answer hopefully will give him some indication of when to follow up or whether they will be receptive to a follow up at all. They could say they will be interviewing for 3 more weeks or have a decision by the end of the day. Then wait a day after that deadline before following up.

Sapphire:
POD to what LazyDaisy said  :)

MacadamiaNut:
1) I agree to get the clues in the interview.

2) Failing that, (i.e. Anthony didn't ask those questions or glean that info in the interview), then a same day or next day phone call is best.  The phone call should be mainly him thanking them for their time and then as a quick closing, asking those follow up questions (When will a decision be made?)  Can also be done via email.

3) Once the answer is known, then yes, what LazyDaisy said, one day after the deadline is fine to ask about the outcome of the decision.

4) If the answers were gleaned from the interview, then #3, but he should still send a thank you and reminder of his interest in email or phone call form by end of the next day.

Good luck, Anthony!

GreenEyedHawk:
Thanks, everyone.  He's been having a terrible time finding a job and he's starting to get really down on himself...I'm trying hard to be supportive but the stress is really wearing on me too, since I'm our sole breadwinner right now.
