Finally! I received a phone call about my computer notifying them that there was something wrong.

First of all, the accent was so thick, I made him repeat himself at least three times whenever he said something.

Second, I informed him that I did not own a computer. He then said well do you have a laptop? I said no and he kept saying well something is wrong with whatever you have.

I just laughed at him and hung up.

I wonder what he would say if you said you owned an Apple 2C.

I think that would have been a great opportunity to say, "Oh NO!  It must be the phone!" and hang up.

Got another one today, this one a letter.  It was addressed to the parents of "college bound student Sirius", and went on about how I had been given an appointment to come in to talk about financing for college.  The name of the company was "College Admission Assistance."  I did ask about some classes at the local community college a few months ago, so apparently this is where that came from.  But it's a big scam.  I read on various websites that if you actually show up for the appointment you're pressured into paying in excess of $2000 US for information that's available with some initiative off the internet for free.   They have a D+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.  So, into the shred box that letter went.

As with the example below from Barclay's bank, numbers starting +44 70 (or 070 in the UK) are special numbers to forward your call overseas and seem to be in more and more use by scammers. Please be careful!

Gotta love this one; it's got SO many levels of wrong:

Final notice

Hereby you are notified that you have unpaid utility bills and your debt amounts to $45 for August 21, 2014.

If you do not fulfill your debt-service obligations within three days in accordance with the applicable legislation, we will have to file actions with the court and apply enforcement options - in this case you can be evicted from the occupied territory (property rights termination).

We are asking you to pay the arrears as soon as possible! See further details here.

In the past couple of days, I've gotten e-mails that say, "Click here to find out how to get your money!"  in the title line, which comes up on my e-mail page.  Not happening.

Occupied territory? What did I tell you about invading France!
My cousin's memoir of love and loneliness while raising a child with multiple disabilities will be out on Amazon soon! Know the Night, by Maria Mutch, has been called "full of hope, light, and companionship for surviving the small hours of the night."

Not quite a scam, but two consecutive subjects in my email this morning that made me chuckle. The Economist is a weekly publication "focusing on international politics and business news and opinion."  Article writers often assume that the reader is already well-informed and probably well-educated.

I read a newsletter from Mother Jones, and they keep asking me if I want to subscribe to the magazine.  I don't think I need to, since Mr. Sirius does and he shares.
