What is the angle?
At this point, the scammer is probably some teenage boy, sitting in an internet cafe in West Africa. His English is probably limited;he's working from a script. He's just hitting every Facebook page that will let him in--male, female, dog, cat...

If he can get a woman to switch to email, he will hand it off to his employer. The employer will start wooing the woman. Once she seems to believe that he is really interested in her, he will start the money deal. The most likely scenario is the "I want to come see you" one. It's amazing what he needs to get a visa to your country. Fees for the embassy. A paid-for plane ticket. Proof that he has X dollars in his bank account. And more. All of this needs to be paid by Western Union to a travel agency. None of it is real. In between pleas for money, he will push hard on the "we are soulmates" thing. If you really love me, you will send the money and by the way, you are the most wonderful woman in the world and I can't live without you.

It's a well-known and all too successful scam, sometimes called the "Sweetheart scam". It's more commonly done the other way--a "woman" falls in love with a man's profile. Still the same teenager at an internet cafe.

What is the angle?

The angle is to find accounts that are active so that they can be sold to mailing lists, more spammers, etc. You've just told 'John' exactly what he wanted to know.

Not me, a local celebrity, who was targeted via his public page.

I've gotten probably a dozen emails a day from the same spammer, so I finally read one out of curiosity.  I'm kind of impressed - if I were actually in the target audience for this (i.e. a horny young guy with bad grammar), I might have been fooled long enough to actually believe it partway.  There's eight paragraphs, most of which are backstory for how this girl is supposedly moving near me, we used to be facebook friends but I deleted her, and I'm the only person she'll know here (although she conveniently never mentions where "here" is supposed to be).  The scammer actually asks if I'll help her move her stuff in and asks if I know anyone who could help her find a job!  Of course, then she casually mentions her current "working from home" job, which is webcam porn, and since her email is unreliable, the best way to chat with her is to use a "special VIP code" to get on her webcam chat.  Uh-huh.

Anyway, here's the non-porny part [WARNING: not-entirely-polite language in places]:

Luckily I saw right through the scam because a) I'm not a guy, b) I don't use Facebook with strangers, c) I don't know anyone whose spelling and typing skills are that atrocious, and d) DUH IT'S A SCAM!  I would have thought it was a real email repurposed to get past spam filters, except it doesn't suddenly end with random links to viagra websites at the bottom . . .

Got one last night in the, believe it or not, good ol' US postal mail, from "Domain Registry of America".

We have our orienteeering club's website through Go Daddy, and my name and address are the registered POC for it. This is all public information available through various registry services that you can execute.

This place apparently is skimming the info and sending official-looking registration expiration letters asking for $X to keep the registration "active". They've done a fabulous job on the letter - looks just like a bill you would get from some place like a doctor's office. Option to pay by check, PayPal, credit card, etc. Laid out just like a normal bill.

However, it's not a competing registry company to Go Daddy - they just want you to pay them $X. You wouldn't be transferring your domain or sites to them. Just paying them $X.

This one is going to be taken down to the local post office and shown to the postmaster there for mail fraud  >:D

Adriana is dying to get ahold of me too.  4 emails since last weekend.  I just wish I could remember who she was... ;D

I also got a few emails from "Facebook" from a guy who saw my profile pictures, thinks I'm s*xy and wants me to contact him so we can do inappropriate things together.

My profile picture is a cartoon and my banner is a drawing my kid made.  Apparently, it just screams "I'm ready and willing!!!"

I decided against responding.   8)

I got a call the other day from someplace that wants to lower my interest rate on my cards. I asked who they were calling for (cause I don't live alone). They couldn't tell me that information. As in "I am not allowed to give you that information" Then they said they are lowering interest rates for "names many many credit card companies" and asks me to confirm I have X (which is the amount I have) in credit card debt. I ask if they are a credit counseling agency (cause at this point I am just curious as to what they are) and they respond no and ask me to confirm at which point I cut them off and tell them I think they are a scam and hang up.

Still curious what exactly they wanted.

Hi, this is Rachel from RoboCaller services calling. Press 1 to be scammed

Credit Card Interest Rate Reduction Scams

As for aa Adrianna, the poor lass can't even remember her own name. She has told others that she is Madison or Paige. According to one anti-spam web site, if you go to look at her naked self, you will acquire spyware and malware.

I almost got caught up in one recently, on FB. I am friends with a friend' of my mom's on FB, and so is she. My mom is not all that tech saavy so I maintain her FB account, check the privacy settings etc. every now and then, and so on.  I got a friend request from her, and I thought hmm... that's kind of strange, I AM friends with her already. but even though i knew better, i accepted it not only for me, but my mom. then i got an IM on FB from her saying "hi, how are you?" i thought it strange but responded, fine, then they came back with something about how she had these vouchers for something and i went, DUH. so i deleted the second friending from both mom and my's friend list, and changed both of our passwords. I also had my mom pass onto her friend her account might have been hacked, which it had been. no harm done, i think

I received a call from the Microsoft Windows people today, who informed me that they have been getting alerts from my computer for 14 days.  After asking her a bunch of useless questions, I asked her to hold on and set the phone down for a few minutes.  I picked it up and asked her to hold on again, and went about my business.  I figured every minute she was waiting for me was a minute she couldn't spend scamming some poor unsuspecting person.

As I posted in another thread, my father recently pressed "1" when "Rachel" called and ended up getting scammed for $900, although we think we're going to get it back.  Anyhow, I'm rather annoyed with these folks right now.

I picked up the phone and said, look, let's talk woman to woman.  Surely, I told her, there has to be something you can do that does not involve scamming people out of their money.  She tried to steer me back to her script and I told her I knew it was a scam, but I also hoped she could find a way to make a living that would also allow her to sleep with a clear conscience at night.  At that point she gave up, and I again told her I hoped she could find something else to do for a living.

The whole scenario makes me sad, for many reasons.

One of DD1's first jobs as a teen lasted all of about 40 minutes.  She'd answered one of those blind ads in the paper saying that they were looking for teens for afterschool work, no experience necessary, etc.  She quit when she realized that it was one of those scammers who call you looking for a donation for firemen/police widows & orphans/other worthy charity.  They keep 95% as a 'fundraising fee' and pass on a few measly $$ to the worthy charity.

We've been getting a 'Microsoft' phone call at least once a week for the past few months, usually with a precursor call the night before from some robot that says 'hello' and hangs up.  It is incredibly annoying.

Last week Housemate answered, the scammer did the spiel, and she said 'yeah, pull the other one' and hung up.  The scammer called her back to abuse her for being rude!

I answered one the other night.  I politely interrupted her during her spiel and pointed out that yes, I'm aware this is a scam, and that I'm on the Do Not Call list, and that the phone call is a federal offence.  Could she please put me through to a supervisor so I can get names to report them to the government?  She couldn't hang up quickly enough.

Hopefully that'll slow the calls for a while.  I suspect there's numerous 'agencies' doing this, so I'm not holding my breath.
