A variant on the phrase

Kippie:
Hello.  I'm a long-time lurker (4 years) and first time poster.  I feel like I've gotten to know many of you over the years, and it was because of this forum that I managed to stay out of trouble.

My company is going through a rough patch.  Our former CEO was forced into retirement.  The new CEO has been acting rashly, and the tension is so thick you can cut it with a knife.  I just want to keep my head down and do my job.

As I was sitting alone in the lunch room last week, the new CEO came in.  He sat down next to me and said, "So what's the word on the street?  Does everyone still hate me?"

I stared at him in shock for a few moments, then smiled and replied, "Not that you would put me on the spot or anything!"  He laughed, apologized, and dropped the subject.

If not for ehell, I wouldn't have had been able to come up with a reply on the spot that wouldn't have gotten me in trouble.  So thank you, everyone!

O'Dell:
Well done! And welcome to the forum I mean welcome out of lurkerdom! :)

Outdoor Girl:
Ditto.

Pippen:
That's some impressive lurking and a great response!

rain:
That was great quick thinking!
