Well, the mystery is solved. Turns out, when she gave me the address to her office she replaced an 8 with a 9 so it showed up on my doorstep this afternoon. I'll send them out again Monday to the correct address where she assures me she will be for the next several weeks. Now I just feel silly!
I think we all do jump to erroneous conclusions sometimes.  Oh, silly us!  :)

I sent MIL's birthday present to the house one block down the street (wrote down the number from their previous house and the street name of the current house) - they did end up able to retrieve it when they went down to explain the mixup!

I learned not to address boxes from memory at the post office.
