I'm guessing that the wife of your boss doesn't know the business is in trouble.  But I agree with the others and use MrTango's response.

Mrs. Boss is the bookkeeper.

I'd reply along the lines of "A Christmas party at this time does not fit with a sustainable business plan." Then call the labor board, like yesterday, if paychecks are bouncing. That's never, ever, acceptable.

You cna say what you want, it won't do any good.

If the boss and his wife need their lifestyle the company can't afford, they are going to have it no matter what you say. 

And start looking for a new job. If the are this blind to reality, the company isn't likely to last much longer.

OP here. I sent a hopefully tactful e-mail mentioning that since we are doing a vendor open house this Friday and the holidays are so busy why don't we have a small office pot-luck instead of Swanky restaurant.  Hopefully, this will head them off at the pass.  For my boss Denial is a river in Egypt. He thinks things are going great!  My paycheck is due on the 10th so we will see what happens then.
