an initiation rite: "doing the dishes" (my MIL strikes again)
« on: December 24, 2012, 01:23:59 PM »
My MIL is a very generous and welcoming woman. Noni was in heaven because my DD came back from college, AND DD brought her roommate with her for a day or two, AND she wanted to introduce Roommate Emily to the grandparents.

So MIL made all sorts of food, and gave Roommate Emily an envelope with some money in it as a gift.
Roommate Emily was a wonderful guest--such nice manners!

Then after the dishes had all been cleared away, my MIL (who had warned me about it before) said, "There's one thing. The first time you're a guest in this house, you have to do the dishes."
Roommate Emily said, "All right," and got up gamely to follow my MIL into the kitchen. My husband was saying, "Oh, really, Mom," and his mother said, "No, they all have to do it!"
And she asked, "Do you need gloves?" Roommate Emily said, "No, I don't think so."

And my MIL said, "Good."

Then she pointed to the already-loaded dishwasher and said, "OK. Now push this button here first, and then that button next."

She's pretty funny sometimes, my MIL!

So Roommate Emily has been initiated into the close family circle. Next time, she won't have to push any buttons.

OK, that's cute. :) If she'd made her handwash a load of dirty pots, not so much.
If wisdom’s ways you wisely seek,
Five things observe with care,
To whom you speak,
Of whom you speak,
And how, and when, and where.

Sounds like she's generous and loving with some mischief sprinkled on top.   :)

Yep, she doesn't seem like the practical-joke kind of person at first. (and she'd never expect a guest or even really visiting famiy to wash dishes--in fact, the reason she played this joke on Roommate Emily is that she had decided Emily is "Family." She wouldn't pay this sort of joke on someone who was still in the "guest" category)

I admit the title had me a little bit scared, but that is a wonderful funny story.  Good for your MIL!  And Emily must be a gem as well.

Merry Christmas, Toots!

At first I was horrified and impressed with Emily's poise... but ended up laughing. Your MIL wins the prank wars!

I'm glad this story had such an awesome ending... even though it meant that I couldn't write my "family should haze" paragraph. ;D
My inner (r-word) is having a field day with this one.

Cute story!

What an awesome Mother in Law and I'm sure Emily feels like part of the family now.  Such a sweet inclusive gesture.  :)
