I haven't been to NYC in 20 years, but I remember how helpful and kind people were

. I was at Washington Park* when it was getting towards dark, and wanted to catch a cab back to Penn Station. So I stood on the curb with a tiny little finger up, asking so politely "Taxi?" while taxis sped by

. A pretzel vendor nearby said, "Lady, that won't work; let me show you". He went out into the middle of the street, flapping his arms, yelling "TAXI!". One pulled up immediately. In thanks, I bought a pretzel.
*I was at the site of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. The building was the same, though it is now part of a university (name?)-the same one where Felicity went, in the TV series. There's a plaque commemorating the disaster.
