That reminds me of a short article S.P.Q. Rahtz ( yes, that is his real name) published in the journal 'Antiquity' many years ago.  It was about figuring out what archaeological reports really say.  Here are some examples.

'Evidence of a Roman bath was discovered' means 'We found a piece of broken tile'.

'Evidence of medieval habitation was lacking' means 'We were a bit too energetic with the back-hoe'.

'the object disintegrated on contact with the air' means 'Jim sat on it'.

'Further research may indicate...' means 'Mine certainly doesn't.

My favorite so far:

Samples from subjects' 4 & 5 were discarded because a bunch of stuff was piled on top of them & were therefore smushed. #overlyhonestmethods
