Somewhere, Miss Manners points out that if a person isn't currently dating but would like to be, going alone gives them the chance to meet other single people, one of whom they might like better than any of their current acquaintances.

Particularly if the "other single people" are men wearing tuxedos.  Assuming she's in the market for a new boyfriend, this is an opportunity.

Resolution: the clan gathered for lunar new year, and it turns out one of the cousins actually went to the same college as the groom and knows him slightly.  He also fits into his father's evening wear, can get time off work (family business, run by his dad and uncle since our parents retired) for a long weekend and thinks it would be a "hoot and a half" to show up as Sprout 1's guest.  They are both tickled -- especially since he also plays Sport.  I got him a miles ticket (which neither of them asked for -- he was going to pay),  he'll stay with her, and I think they will have a very good time.  Thanks for all the great input.  And since he is her cousin, they can both use the party to meet others!

She was invited with a plus-one; I don't think she's obligated to go alone if she doesn't want to. And it sounds like she has found a solution.

(And it sounds like her cousin is distant enough from the groom that he wouldn't have had any expectation of being on the guest list, so it's not one of those awkward situations where somebody's plus-one is someone who was deliberately not invited by the HC.)

Of course there's no reason she can't go alone. I was addressing bopper's post, which seemed to be saying she should go alone even though she had been given the option of bringing an escort and, according to the most recent update, had indeed chosen an escort.
