I would love this. A 9 hour workday is way shorter than my usual workday.  I'm in healthcare and 50-60 hour work weeks are the norm for me.  Since I am salary, no overtime either.

No, every company I've heard of who does this had an 8 hr day for the work Friday.

I've done it. It was lovely.  I also did 12hour shifts and worked only T-W-Th = even lovlier. and I got to travel all over the Maritimes because I the extra days off. If I could find a job that offered it I would do everything I could to arrange it.

There are many other fields where this is true.  I've put in so many ten-hour days in my time that this wouldn't be a big deal.

I'd do it. I often work longer than my official hours anyway, so the extra hour wouldn't be a big deal.  But I can understand not doing it to enjoy the quiet time at work. We have a rota to cover having the office open with a skeleton staff on Saturdays., then we get a day off in  lieu. As Saturday is always really quiet, I can catch up on a lot, then, and then if I take a Friday or a Monday off I get the relaxation of a long weekend.

I did that shift as well as the 4- 10 hour day one whenmy kids were really young. It saved on daycare costs and I got a day off to spend with them...but it was very had doing those 10 hour days. Once they were in school or had after school activities it would never work.

I said yes, purely because as others have said if you tend to work over your hours anyway you're unlikely to notice the extra hour and then you get your time back with the full day off.  I don't think you're odd for enjoying the quiet in the office though, it's the same reason people like to work from home.

I would do it in a heartbeat. I need the occasional day at home, alone, to relax and recharge.

But I also get enjoying the quiet work time. I'm most productive when I can silence my ringer, put in headphones, and work without interruptions.

My office does have this option for the administrative staff, and several people really enjoy it.  I'm not interested because I'm already working 9:30 am to 6:00 pm, in order to avoid the worst of rush hour traffic.  Working an extra hour later would have me leaving at 7:00, which doesn't leave much time for stuff at home.  Working an hour earlier in the morning puts me in the middle of rush hour traffic, doubling my commute, and forcing me to get out of bed 1 1/2 to 2 hours earlier to make up the difference.  I hate mornings too much for that.

It might not be work, it might be the drive, the cost of gas, etc. driving people to choose the Friday off option.  If I am at work anyway I might as well stay and work the extra hour.  Then every other Friday I don't have to brave icy roads, spend money on gas, add miles to my car.  I can also schedule doctor's appointments and various other things for those days so I don't have to take time off of work.

I know somebody who works longer hours 4 weekdays and one weekend every month so she can be home with her toddler for a weekday (her husband is there the weekends she works).

This. I would love to be able to do it. Then I wouldn't have to burn leave to go to the doctor or whatever, since my specialists don't work weekends.

My boss did something similar. He needed more people on duty from 7:00 -7:30 because we open our doors earlier than most campuses in our districts. Most open at 7:15 but we need more time to feed breakfast to our kids - nearly 100% of our kids eat at school.


Since I'm there anyways - I monitor the breezeway and get to leave at 3 instead of 3:30. Except with Science Olympiad and class I was taking I I haven't been able to leave "on time" 3 days a week since we got back from break. The class is over Monday is the last Olympiad practice - but I have to be at Olympiad all Day Saturday.
