I'll throw my hat into the ring with the others. A CPAP is a good thing.
First of all, I'm single and live alone. There is nobody around to tell me that I snore or stop breathing when I sleep, but I was the first person to tell the doctor 'but I sleep FINE! I've always slept fine! I wake up and get to work and there's Nothing Wrong!' But one holiday weekend visiting family, and the other person in the room said that I kept her up all night snoring, so I agreed to the sleep study.
My apnea was fairly mild, and I got a CPAP with the nose mask. I HATED it. It was uncomfortable, and every time I put it on, I felt like I was suffocating. But I'm nothing if not persistant, so I tried it, every night. At first, I was pulling the mask off in the middle of the night (and turning off the machine!) in my sleep. Once, I actually took the machine apart and put it in the sink, In My Sleep. Weird. But I noticed something. I no longer tore up the bed in my sleep. The sheets stayed tucked in, the pillows stayed on the bed. I no longer kicked my cat several times. When I went to sleep, I had better be in a comfortable position, because I was going to wake up in that exact position! After a few months, I managed to keep the mask on all night, and now I won't even take a nap without it.
My cat can sleep with me. The bed stays made. I don't need an afternoon nap on the weekends. (durn. I loved my naps), but most of all, those persistant dark circles under my eyes are GONE. I thought they were a side effect of night shift, but no. I really wasn't sleeping, and didn't even know. My blood pressure went down. I lost 30 lbs (a drop in the bucket, I assure you), but overall, I felt BETTER. It wasn't as earth-shattering a change as some other people, but it was a Change, and I liked it.
At first, when I put on the mask, I would have to concentrate on breathing, all the while my brain is screaming, 'I can't breathe! I can't breathe! I can't breathe!....oh, I'm breathing...' and eventually, I got used to it. It's rarely an overnight thing. My nose stays clearer when I have a cold. heck, I catch less colds! And I'm allergic to my cat, but she can snuggle up next to me now, because my air supply is Way Over There!
Don't stress out about not being able to use it right away. That happens to a lot of us. Some people never get used to it (I know 2 people who just can't), but for the rest of us, it's nice....
