PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not let them do anything and don't give them your insurance info.  If DH has done this, call your insurance company and tell them NOT to issue a check to ANYONE!  It's been on the news here in the NYC area that many homeowners who did have damage from Hurricane Sandy have been scammed.  They let contractors get checks directly from insurance, and insurance paid but the contractors are MIA.  Now the homeowners are out the money and the work will not be done.  This is NOT the right way to do business.

Buy a NO SOLICITING sign, and warn your DH that it's a heck of a lot easier to learn to say NO than it is to try and recoup thousands in lost money, or heirlooms (as others have pointed out this could also be a scam to rob/case your house.)

I had one of these yesterday.. just phone call but it was amusing.
He said that they were working in our neighborhood, and noticed that our roof had shingle damage, and did we want to have them come out and do a free inspection?
I told him no, that we just had our roof replaced three months ago. Which is true. And no, we haven't had storms since then.
He replied that they must have been looking at the wrong house, and hung up.
