Is anyone else glued to the TV today?
« on: April 19, 2013, 12:38:17 PM »
I am and it got my thinking of all the other times I have done this.  Some very sad events but also some happy ones.

The happier ones have been the royal weddings.

Anybody else watching today?

I was a little late for work because I could not tear myself away from the news to shower and get ready.  Now I'm at work and checking news sites rather obsessively.  I am really, really glad that this awful week is ending, and I hope next week is a much better one.

Me too!  It has been a long horrible week.

Well, I'm not quite glued to the TV.  Sticky-noted might be a better description.  After all, I'm listening to the TV coverage as I type this.

I like to catch the police and government press conferences but kind of tune out when the yearbook  pictures come on or the license plate number of an already recovered car is repeated over and over.

Not near a tv.  Why, what's going on that everyone's watching?

My husband and I have been watching...since last night! We used to live in the town next-door in Mass., and know many people and many places in Watertown. I used to drive ten minutes to the Arsenal Mall (one of the police staging points.)
The same connections are with Boston, as well.

We are shattered. Our hearts and prayers go out to all involved!

I won't lie... in 2001, the TV literally did not go off, or away from news channels, from the time the second tower got hit, until the morning of the 14th.

It reminds me somewhat of O.J.'s slow chase in the Bronco way back when.

I listened continuosly 6-8:30am, intermittently since then.  I have several evening news programs set to record.  I'll watch them with one finger on the Fast Forward button.  I want news, not a repeat of what they said this morning.

DottyG - do you live in the US?

I'm in Omaha, Nebraska, USA.  Thats near the middle of the US.  Around here the bombers at the Boston Marathon have dominated news ever since it happened.  If you've watched a news show or read a newspaper you've seen the coverage.

The Onion has been spot-on in its satire of continuous news coverage. Some headlines:

BREAKING: No News Breaking
BREAKING: Still Nothing*
BREAKING: Has The Word ‘Breaking’ Lost All Its Meaning?
BREAKING: Can Anyone Ever Truly Know Anything? What Is The Truth?

*("Reports have confirmed, however, that instead of saying one brother has died and the other is on the run, sources will instead switch that information around to make it sound different than previous reports, thus making it seem like new information is being added. Sources are now saying that one brother is on the run and the other has been shot and killed.")

I just changed the station to some fluff 10 minutes ago.  My brain has a hurt from it all.  My home hockey team is actually there and had to stay in their hotel all day.  They interviewed a few of the players for the few minutes of local news and they were talking about how scary it all is.  I will say, their uncle makes for a good interview!
