Aha! I may have an answer. I talked to my friend Karo and he says you almost certainly didn't cause offense.
It appears we've been thinking about it backwards - we all assumed that you had inadvertently insulted them by going against some manner of cultural guideline. The truth may well be that he was worried he would offend you by not responding correctly. For example, did you expect a gift back or a card? So when the son said "she's bought us a plant" what he was actually thinking was "tell me what I'm supposed to do." As it was around Christmas time he may well have assumed there would be lots of traditions around gift giving and that if he got it wrong he would upset you.

Basically it seems like a cultural misunderstanding, with both parties worried they have insulted the other.

This would fit with things returning to normal now - if you stayed away they may have presumed that they had offended you culturally. As I've said, it's an innocent misunderstanding. You may want to explain that you took no offense, or it may well be settled now. Either way, you weren't in the wrong.

THANKYOU Blue_Bunny!!!! Thank you thank you!!!

I went back in there this morning after all the encouragement from e-hellions.It would be weirdness on top of weirdness to bring it up again. Tomorrow i am sure we'll stop again & i will be extra extra sure to smile & say good morning & ask how his day went (i know it started horribly this morning).

As i have said many times before ... e-hellions rule! Thanks everyone :)

Maybe he has a plant phobia of some sort. I absolutely hate plants. My mom once held a plant up to my neck to test me and I ran screaming from the room. It's even worse if I have to touch their roots. I don't know why, but anything to do with either potted or garden plants just freaks me out.

My first thought was, ummmm....how weird.  (please don't take offense). Then when I actually finished the sentence, I can absolutely see the phobia.  The roots can be really weird, who knows what critters are living in them and they often have a weird feel.  Now I'm starting to look at my houseplants differently.  Frankly, I"m surprised more people don't have phobias about plants.
