college graduatio parties

I know most of my adult friends have had high school graduation parties for their children and most guest give gifts to the graduating student.Is it proper to have a graduation party for that same student after they graduate from 4 years of college or is that an event for the immediate family?

I think you can invite anyone to those parties whom you like, but I'd stick with close local relatives and friends.  It's not, for example, an occasion to invite one's boss (unless the graduating student's employer has sponsored or subsidized them during their school years) or out-of-town guests.

Also, graduations are not gift-giving occasions the way weddings and showers are.  Etiquette doesn't require or expect it.

I think it is appropriate for someone to throw a 2nd gradutation party for their child. It is also appropriate for a guest to attend the party without bringing a gift. What would be innapropriate would be if the graduate was registered or if there was an emphasis made on gifts.

I think it really depends on how close everyone is to the graduate. I also believe that getting a degree is a wonderful reason to celebrate. It's hard work and deserves some sort of recognition although not necessarily one that costs money.

Since in my day/region we didn't have parents throw parties for high school graduates, I can't specifically address the convention about this.

However, I think a nice luncheon for close relatives and maybe a couple of good friends would be something I would enjoy it if I were a new grad.
