I had to tell a disgustingly large number of people to CLOSE THE GATES AT THE DOG PARK on the weekend.
There are two gates at the off-leash park, the point being to close one gate before opening the other. So dogs can't get out. I was appalled at the number of people who walked in by opening both gates and worse: walked out and left both gates WIDE OPEN. I'm not exaggerating when I say that if my dog had escaped (which she nearly did a couple of times) that she would have been across the parking lot and dead on the road. She is FAST. I was terrified to leave the entrance because I had to keep running over to close the gates behind people, at least a dozen times in the 1.5 hours I was there. The only reason why I didn't leash up my dog and leave was because she hadn't seen her best friend (same fast breed) all winter and the weather was finally decent enough for a play date.
At one point a bunch of people were coming in and they were opening both gates. My friend and I asked a teenage boy who was just standing there in front of the open gate to please close it. We explained why you have to open one at a time. He said, quote: "Well this gate was already open when we got here." I couldn't believe the sheer stupidity and negligence of so many people!
In all honesty, I had to take an anti-anxiety pill when I got home and I am seriously afraid to go back to that park. What is supposed to be a relatively safe place to let your dog run off-leash is in reality a very dangerous place for my dog because of people.
