What about hiring yourselves out to people? Our youth group did that once--"hire a teen" to help you clean out the basement, paint the porch, cater the dinner, etc.?

Not necessarily fast.

We had a community yard sale with proceeds going to our cause. Made about 2k over a drizzly weekend.

Thanks for the ideas, folks!

We live in a relatively small town and these two were involved with many groups and are well loved. We've got a few restaurant nights, a wine and cheese event and a couple of area churches are doing bake sales.

Has a fund been set up at a bank?  If so, you can try to spread the word through social media.  If they're well-loved you might be surprised at how many friends would be willing to donate.  And a bank fund might seem less suspicious than a crowdfunding site.
