Does anybody like the movie Grease???
« on: January 07, 2007, 08:50:10 PM »
I think I remember that there are a few GREASE fans on this board.

Well,  just fyi, they are doing a broadway version of it (NYC, I think).  On channel 7 right now, there is a reality show (think American Idol) for the auditions for the broadway show....

Enjoy!

ETA: I am on the east coast of the States, (USA) since I know we have many internationals on the board.

Love the movie.  Have never had the chance to see it as a play though.  I watched that show, I couldn't figure out what exactly they were looking for.  One guy could sing, and he seemed like he could dance, but they didn't pick him because of how he looked at the singing audition?  Couldn't figure that one out, but they picked a 42 year old Danny.  Huh?

This is a revival.

It was a Broadway show in the early 70s before it was a movie, then it was revived in the mid 90s, and now it's being revived again.

I watched the show last night. I enjoyed it and thought it was an okay reality show, but it sure sounds very long-winded. I hope that when the show finally does open, it is worth all the hoopla being made of it through this reality show. And I couldn't understand some of the casting decisions regarding the auditionees. If they weren't right for Sandy, then why not just consider them for Rizzo?

"Grease is the word, it's the word, that you heard, it's got a mood, it's got a meaning..."

Why no...I have not been a diehard Grease fan since I first saw it at the drive-in at the age of 3 (in 1978, for the record!) - why do you ask?

I had the Grease puzzle and collecting cards and lunch box. And I still have the 78 even though I no longer have a record player (actually given to me in college and I was still thrilled).

I started to watch the show last night because I figured I could get REALLY into it, but for some reason didn't. I'll have to watch next week. Oh, Frenchy is my favorite. Way more like me than Sandy.

And from what I understand, they're not casting the entire cast with this process, just Sandy and Danny.

I have the original broadway album.  Never play it though.  The material was a bit more "adult" than the movie.

By the way, Olivia Newton John had to be sewn into those pants.

AND, in the scene where Dinah Manoff is flirting with the TV guy, her strapless dress lets go.  If you look carefully, you'll see her cover herself with her program.

I've totally noticed that, I thought it was written in, didn't realize it was a flub.

He hasn't yet been selected as Danny.  He's just in the running, going to Grease University.  Does anyone else think that reality shows seem to include people who seem not to fit what they are looking for, whether it's personality, looks or whatever?  I think it's for entertainment value.
I've never knitted anything I could recognize when it was finished.  Actually, I've never finished anything, much to my family's relief.

oh, no doubt about it - 'reality tv' is ALL scripted (by prodding or actual written script)...

I wondered how she got those on without removing her feet.

I like the movie and the play, which I've seen many different productions of.  I used to have the original Broadway cast recording on casette tape, but I think I got rid of it.

I do have to wonder if a lot of those people on the show are there for entertainment purposes only. Remember that 18 year-old girl named Fawn? Billy Bush arranged another audition for her, even though she blew the first one. She totally butchered Guy and Dolls to the point where it was almost amusing. One has to wonder if she was just brought back for the entertainment purposes of performing so badly.

ooooh, I get to be an annoying name dropper!

Last year my company did Grease and the guy who played our Danny is in the final 15 for the show!  His name is Derek, and he was on last Sunday's show, but just for a minute (he's wearing a blue cut off shirt) he's plastered all over the website, though.

And in the previews for next week, there's a girl named Juliana auditioning who was our Ariel in Footloose 2 years ago.  I don't think she makes the cut, though.

AND, the choreographer of the TV show, and the assistant choreographer of the Broadway show is Vince, and apparently he's going to be shown a lot on TV, too.
Vince choreographed our Grease last summer.  He's a sweetheart, and a very easy choreographer to work with.

Since Vince and Derek know each other, I don't know if that is some kind of conflict of interest.  Maybe Vince won't really have a say in who stays and goes.

Unfortunately, I can't make myself watch the show because those songs now make me want to gouge my eyeballs out with a rusty fork.  Too many times hearing them during tech rehearsals...
