One more note on the subways. 

The platforms are subject to a phenomenon known as 'weather archaeology'.  This means that you will experience the heat and humidity of a few days before while waiting for a train.  On the first day or two of a heat wave, subway platforms can be almost refreshing.  For a few days after the heat wave breaks, the platforms will still be ghastly.

Can this thread be moved to the Travel section to make it easier to find in the future? My plans to visit NY are still in the some day stage.
