a couple questions about attending a fight
« on: January 07, 2007, 09:10:17 PM »

My boyfriend and I are really into UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship, its kind of like a boxing event but its all kinds of fighting styles adapted and incorporated into one as a kind of league. Usually a fighter is well versed in one particular style. There is usually a title fight or main event, then a couple smaller fights before and after it.) Recently we found an event close to us. We usually buy the event on pay per view with 2 other couples. We told one of the couples shortly before we got tickets and they said they did want to go but they could only afford upper level seats (essentially cheaper seats). We got a special presale opportunity and the seats were going fast. The site was set up so they would offer you the best available seats at that time, you had 2 minutes to decide and continue to buy mode, or then you had to forfeit so another site browser had the opportunity to buy them or be passed up. My boyfriend and I sprung for extremely good (extremely expensive) seats. We're both really excited but I'm a little uneasy as to wether or not it was rude to buy good seats and let the friends set futher away. I'm not suggesting that we offer them the money or pay the difference, but should we have went for the crappier seats? They are still going to ride to the event with us, we'll probably have some drinks and dinner before hand, but when it comes to enterting the venue, they'll be going one way and we'll be going another. Anyone have any thoughts?

Also I'm not real sure what to wear. In movies it always seems like women are kind of dressed up when they go to boxing events and things. When we watch the events on TV, celebrities like Paris Hilton, Andre Agassi, Joe Rogan, lots of others are there. I would hate to show up looking like a blue light special when etiquette says dress up! It wouldn't make much sense to me, put on nice clothes to watch guys get their faces bloodied, but you never know.
If anyone has any answers, please reply! ;)

As to the ticket purchase, I would have purchased all four tickets and gotten reimbursed for the other couple's tickets.  That's the only way to guarantee that you sit together.

However, I have no idea how to dress for this unless there is a rule that the more expensive your seat, the better you should dress for the event.  That certainly applies to concerts and the opera.

Yes, its for the February event. UFC # 68 (I think): The Uprising. In Columbus, OH. Thanks for replying btw. It makes me feel good since you've been to events yourself.

Am I the only one who saw the subject of this discussion and thought that one should take dress cues from the other wedding guests?  I guess I've read one too many stories here about combat at the nuptials.

I might be a little put out if we had made plans to see an event together and then didn't sit next to each other because of price.

They were upfront about their price restrictions and at that point you should have made it clear what your plans were and decided then if you were going to sit together.

Agreeing to go with them on a double date and then upgrading your seats I don't think was very nice. (if that is the way it worked out, you really didn't state)

You say you found an event close to you, which indicates that this is unusual and quite an opportunity.  I would go for the best seats I could get.  The main object of the evening isn't to spend time with your friends, which you can do anytime, but to go to an event that you don't often get to attend in person.  Let me tell you that if I were going to see George Jones and my friend could only do the balcony and I could do row 1, I'd do row I.  I don't think it is inconsiderate or selfish.  I think it is just one of those rare thing    that you can either grasp or not.  Plus, If I were your friends I would be very upset if you got lousy seats just because of me.  I say go for the good seats and enjoy the show.
As for dressing...what is Paris going to do about it if you show up in blue jeans and a sweatshirt?  Seriously, I wouldn't worry about it.  I would aim for comfort as long as I were presentable and let it go at that.
I've never knitted anything I could recognize when it was finished.  Actually, I've never finished anything, much to my family's relief.

Recently attended an XFS (Xtreme Fighting Series) event (similar to UFC). We were in a suite and had a good view of the arena - it seemed to me that virtually everyone was in casual wear. I wore jeans, a sweater, boots, and a nice jacket; we were hosting a group of my husband's clients.
