I have a Groupon for carpet cleaning.  The guy is coming today.  I'm just wondering....is it customary to tip the carpet cleaning guy on top of what you paid for the Groupon? If so, how much?  (The Groupon was for $80 for several rooms, if that matters.)

Yes, groupon suggests you give the same tip you would have if you'd bought the service without a discount. Having said that, I have no idea if or how much you tip carpet cleaners!

In fact, I think it's really important to the success of Groupon for customers to tip on the full retail price, and *not* on the discounted price.

Because otherwise, service people won't be willing to invest much for future Groupon people.

Personally, I think I'd tip $10 to $15 for a carpet person. It's not a "20%" situation, to me; it's a "flat mount that doesn't seem too chintzy." So, several rooms.  I'd go $15 to $20.

Should you tip on a Groupon?: Yes, and you should tip on the pre-discounted amount.

Should you tip the carpet cleaners?: Maybe? I have to admit that I wouldn't have thought to tip carpet cleaners. According to itipping.com (who contacted several cleaning companies), tipping is not required but generally the cleaners are allowed to accept them. Standard tipping rates are in the 10-15% range or $10-20.  (http://www.itipping.com/tip-carpet-cleaner.htm).

If you would tip for that service if it weren't discounted, yes.

In a general sense, yes - but I've never tipped a carpet cleaner.

Yes, if you would normally tip on that service. And tip on the actual amount, not the discounted.

I don't know that I would tip carpert cleaners either, unless they did something above and beyond what they were supposed to. But if they simply came in, cleaned, and left, I don't know think I would, and it probably woudln't have ocurred to me to do so.

Tipping on the full retail price is expected.  After all, if someone performs a service any discount you get is not going to discount their performance as well.

Carpet cleaning isn't a job I usually tip for.  And you should tip on the full price of the groupon before the discount.

Yes.  No reason a service worker should be short-changed because there was a coupon.

With all of these coupons, make sure that you check what it says.

One of the coupons from restaurants.com we've used says that an 18% gratuity is automatically added onto the bill when you use the coupon.  One night we left a 38% tip as we did not realize that one had already been added to the bill.

Whoops!

Yes, we usually tip based on full retail price.  That said, I have no idea what you tip carpet cleaners.  :)

We had our carpets cleaned on a groupon, and we didn't tip.

I've never heard of tipping a carpet service. Tipping is generally for services that receive below minimum wage(wait staff) a personal body service (hair, nails, massage) or for a service where you want to be generous because the person went above and beyone. I don't tip my doctor, the cashier, the pest control guy, etc. and I've not heard of anyone who does. I guess I'm curious as to how one decides who should be tipped?
