Once you switched to giving a family gift like a popcorn machine and they didn't give a gift to you and your DH the next year, I think they were signalling that they don't want to exchange gifts.


I agree. I think you're fine in not giving them anything this Christmas. If the kids (or parents!) ask you where their present is (which would be very tacky!) you could just say "I assumed that you didn't want to exchange gifts."
