I had two. My bff hosted one for our friends, my mom hosted one for her friends/family. No duplicate guests and no one was offended.

I had 3 for my first child back in '94. An office baby shower, a co-ed shower hosted by good friends, and a family and friends of our parent's shower hosted by two of my MIL's friends. The co-ed shower was terribly funny because we were the first in our group to have kids and we didn't register so we received some very inventive gifts.

Gah!  When mom says it's rude to throw more than one shower, and then wants the shower already scheduled to be cancelled so that this "one shower" is hers, it's not about the shower at all.  I'd almost be tempted to say "Hey mom, I looked it up and you're right about one shower!  But I also read that the person who offers first is the one who throws it.  So you snooze, you lose".

Obviously, the solution is to graciously accept both showers, but it's still tempting.  She's mean and controlling.
