We recently returned a 'lost' library book - long after we paid the fine - and the librarian couldn't believe we didn't keep it! I was surprised that people would keep them because the fine is less than the replacement of the book.

As for the OP question, I agree speak to the Librarian and they'll tell you the proper process.

As a librarian, what we care about is A. That books are returned and B. That you let us know when they are damaged.
If wisdom’s ways you wisely seek,
Five things observe with care,
To whom you speak,
Of whom you speak,
And how, and when, and where.
