If a cat jumps up in your lap and you're not interested, why would you stand up and dump them?  What's wrong with just lifting them down?

One possible reason is allergies: someone who is allergic to an animal probably wants to minimize physical contact, and cat hair or dander on your pants might be less of an issue than on your hands.
Any advice that requires the use of a time machine may safely be ignored.

If someone has allergies to pet dander or hair, they are much better off not coming inside a home where there are pets. Even with vacuuming and dusting, the hair builds up on a constant basis.

If they have allergies, they are better off meeting outside the pet owner's home.
