Sympathy card for death of a friend?
« on: January 06, 2014, 02:18:11 AM »
My long-time handyman Hank called to tell me that his best friend Bert had died.  Hank occasionally brought Bert to my house to help with big tasks, so I knew and liked Bert.  Would it be appropriate to send Hank a sympathy card for the death of his friend?

I did express my condolences on the phone.

It is my experience that it is almot never inappropriate to send a card like this.

When my former boss's friend (since kindergarten) died, I sent him a sympathy card. He was in his 70s at the time, so they had been friends for more than 65 years. He actually called to thank me for thinking of him. I agree. Send the card.

One of the most touching cards we ever received was when friend of 40 years passed away. It was the only card we received about his passing, so it is well-remembered and I got the feeling that the sender really appreciated the depth of our pain.

(It also made me glad that she probably has a friend just as close.)

Always appropriate.

As a good friend of mine once said, "It's not only the family who grieve."

Yes, absolutely if you want to send a card, do so.  I'm sure Hank would appreciate knowing that you also cared for Burt and are sad he is gone.
"After all this time?"
"Always."
