We recently returned a 'lost' library book - long after we paid the fine - and the librarian couldn't believe we didn't keep it! I was surprised that people would keep them because the fine is less than the replacement of the book.

As for the OP question, I agree speak to the Librarian and they'll tell you the proper process.

As a librarian, what we care about is A. That books are returned and B. That you let us know when they are damaged.
