I really like your note. I think it graciously accepts his gift and offers an explanation as to why you haven't sent a note sooner.

Just want to update!  The check arrived today and I wrote a thank you note that will be mailed tomorrow.  I went with the wording outlined in the original post :)  Thanks so much for the input, everyone!

A good 'cover' to use if you are planning on using gift money for a bill of some kind is to think about something you won't have to cut out thanks to the gift.

So:

"Thanks for your generous gift! We'll be spending it on our Netflix subscription/a night out on the town/enjoying ourselves this weekend/theatre tickets."

Sounds much nicer than "on the electricity bill"!:)

For what it's worth,  I always give myself till the end of January for Christmas thank yous, anyway. (Not that I take that long,  it's just when the guilt steps up a notch if I've forgotten.) So I think you wrote it in plenty of time,  even if the gift hadn't gotten lost, cranky grandfather aside.
