The victory V is with the palm facing away from the person doing it. The V sign is with the palm facing towards the person doing it and with the fingers jabbed into the air.

"Sans" is French for "without," and it was Archduke Ferdinand's assassination that led to WWI.  He was "Franz Ferdinand," which sounds like "Sans Ferdinand."

ohhhh...i had the 'without' part, I was just missing the rhyme.  Duh!
