My younger cat, Rose (about 8 year old ), was meowing at us when we got home yesterday after church.  From downstairs, terribly pitifully as if lost from the world.  Because she is "stuck" on top of one of the heating ducts.... that she climbed up on... by herself.
In the past, I have run to the basement to see what is wrong and get all concerned.  Which just makes her jump from duct to top shelf to duct work.  Then climb down when she deemed I showed enough concern.   Recently, I have taken to giving her older sister, Darcy, catnip while Rose cries.  "Poor me, Poor me that no one misses.  Poor me that no one loves.  Poor me who is lost and for....hey, catnip upstairs?"
Yesterday, both DH and I had enough.  "Rose, knock it off and get up stairs if you want snuggles."  About 2 minutes later a slightly dusty cat comes up the steps.

The older cat, Darcy (11 years old), has never done much proper meowing.  She squeeks out a meow or opens her mouth and nothing comes out.  However, she has the cat mutter downpat.
Most of the year, the cats are sent to the basement at bedtime.  (Box, food, water, and warms snuggle spots)  When told at around 9PM  "Kitties! Bedtime!"  They are to go to the basement door.  Darcy about once a week will start muttering "don't wanna. Not tired"  But if we haven't shooed them to the basement by 10PM, Darcy sits by the door muttering "Come ON people, it's bedtime."

... because it is "dinner" time, and he will surely starve if I don't feed him RIGHT NOW.  Dinner usually happens around 6pm, but with the snow causing a lot of work-from-home days lately, and the DF working part-time, we've noticed that there must be a problem with the clocks in our house because each day, dinner time seems to arrive earlier.  Last time I could have sworn it was only about 3:30pm. Incidentally "breakfast" used to happen at about 3, 4 in the morning.  Again, some feline temporal vortex has affected the house and we find ourselves dishing it out right about the time David Letterman comes on.

... because it's bedtime and he can't find his catnip turkey.

... because one of us is in the bathroom and he wasn't invited.

When we were out walking once, we saw (and heard!) Jack crying for help from 30 feet up a neighbor's tree. We told him, "There are no cat skeletons in trees, Jack. See you at home."

He was waiting for us when we got home.

Because I'm sitting here at the computer and Fred knows it's the time I usually start getting ready for bed. He's meowing and walking in circles.

Tomorrow morning, he'll meow until I make the bed. Then he has to inspect it. One morning I left a small pillow off the bed and he meowed for about an hour until I figured out what was bothering him.

Fred is the cat in my avatar--he's doing his daily morning inspection of the just made  bed in that picture.

Our old cats would meow if we were still in bed (or if the bed wasn't made) after 7.30am on a weekday because that was the time they decreed the beds became theirs.  Our generous overlords let us lie on in the weekends.

My DH, who is plainly a Bad Person and a reprobate of the highest order, has fed the cat with - and the cruelty of this cannot be over-emphasised - cat food. Well, wet cat food, and dry crunch, and there was a small amount of chicken as a treat after she had her thyroid pill. But not nearly enough. I am also a Bad Person because when I go to bed, I turn the electric blanket off, which means that the cat's bed, in which she generously allows us to sleep, cools down. This is plainly not satisfactory.

Furthermore, as a woman of a Certain Age, I currently have only two temperatures. I have 'oh, good grief, it's flipping perishing in here, turn some heat on' and 'oh, good grief, it's like an oven in here, please open a window'. Nothing in between. This means that if the electric blanket isn't on when I go to bed, I can't get to sleep because I'm cold, but within a couple of hours, I wake up overheating. I know it will pass, but just at the moment, I don't sleep well. I could therefore do without a certain furry person deliberately waking me up when she wants a cuddle, usually about 30 minutes after I've dropped off.

- He's hungry!
- He's dying of starvation right now!
(Dieting is hard, sweetums, I should know! :( too bad I don't have someone to so carefully ration out 100% MY food, I'd be skinny already.)

- She wants to go in the garage and roll in the dirty.

- "Oh hai you're (yawn) home!" I think the mid-meow yawns are the cutest!

My cat squeaks at me because it is 1am, and she wants to play.

Or because it is midnight and she wants to play.

Or because someone is in the bathroom, but the door is closed and she can't get in.

My late Kitty meowed at me to hurry up and sit down so she could get on my lap and be petted.

My cat Cylver meows because He Has Entered The Room, and everyone needs to know it!

Bailey gave me a rather loud "MEEEEEEEEEEEOWWRRR!" this morning when I had to scruff her to get her out of Dh's office.  Sherlock was easy to grab as he's not particularly fast, but I had to scruff her before she ducked back under the low storage shelves and man did she howl at me!  Our oldest son has a bedroom in the basement, down the hall from the office and he came out of his room saying "What was THAT?"

Brandy is the only one allowed in there right now, as DH is keeping food in there just for her since the other two rarely let her at the food bowl on the first floor.

Sorry to include another species...

My guinea pig Custard is wheeking at me because I am next to the fridge where all the yummy vegetables are and I'm not bringing him any!

He already has guinea pig muesli and hay and will have his vegetable ration later.

My cats meow at me because I neither want nor need an escort every time I enter a bathroom. Davi is especially bad for this because it is one of the few times he will let me pet him a lot. Obviously in his kitty mind sitting on toilet/standing at the counter = cannot do anything terrible to him.

My cats complain because breakfast/dinner/before bed snack is not exactly on time or even early.

Toby complains to me because there are tons of birds at the bird feeder but there's this pesky set of windows in the way. How am I to know he is a MIGHT HUNTER when he can't chase and kill the birds?

Toby also meows at me because I walked by the huge cat tree we built for him and DID NOT PET HIM. This is highly offensive to cats.

Sassy is yelling at me because I've closed the door to the 'hoarder' room that she used to be allowed into.  It has just gotten out of control with stuff all over the place so I need to get it tidied up.  The other night, I couldn't sleep because everytime she went in there, she knocked something over or was pawing at something and driving me nuts.  So I got up, kicked her out and shut the door.

Peggy isn't a talker, fortunately.  The only time she yells at me is when she is in hunter mode and is bringing me her catch.  Usually just one of those spring things.  They both love those.

Yeah ours does that when she needs her water bottle refilled.

I have another one...My dearly departed cat meowed because there is water on the floor and on his dry food and not in his water bowl. He would like both new water and dry food. Water which gets there  several times daily after he swats his water bowl until it splashes into his dry food , which he then eats a bit of.  Of course he also meowed if I put less food in his dry bowl , so 1/2 of it would end up soggy.   god forbid the time I tried to just sprinkled a little water on his dry food , you would have thought he was getting a bath, putting water on kibble was obviously a union job and way above my pay grade.
