IMO, if I'm paying and I happen to have a coupon or gift card, then I'm going to use it and it's really none of anyone else's business how I paid for the meal.

I met a guy at a coffee shop* once and before I could order, he proudly presented me with a coupon for a free drink that he'd obtained somehow. I think it was for a free plain coffee, any size. However I was watching my caffeine intake and had always planned to have a small hot chocolate (that I would pay for myself). It didn't ruin the occasion, but it was awkward to meet up on what was supposed to be a first date, and immediately reject something he offered me. Of course he was just trying to be nice, but he was also betting I would want the rather specific thing the coupon was for, and he bet wrong.

*Serving many coffee drinks but also hot chocolate, cider, many kinds of tea, soda, lemonade...

If I were on a date I could care less, as long as the place appealed. I wouldn't want to go if the only attractive thing was the coupon/groupon savings but otherwise - sure.
