Any French speakers here? A little help, s'il vous plait!
« on: January 08, 2007, 04:00:56 PM »
Okay this is a slightly peculiar request, but I'm hoping someone who can speak French may be able to help me.
I've been given a beautiful box of chocolates by a dear friend, but the descriptions are in French. One of them reads: "Coeur de truffe au miel parfum naturel de lavande enrobe de chocolat noir extra-fin." (Apologies for the lack of accents here, if anyone knows how to get them on the forum, please tell me!)
Here's my problem: from this I get 'honey' and I get 'perfume of lavender' but I am actually allergic to lavender - specifically the oil it produces. What I don't know is if this description means that there is actual lavender perfume in the chocolate! Can anyone clarify?

Like I said, a weird request, but I'm sure you won't fail me, EHellions! :)

It may well be lavender, although it could be some obscure fruit that tastes/smells a bit like lavender. The description sounds like it would use proper lavender.
Personally, I'd avoid it just in case.

"French fries , French dressing , French bread... and to drink - Peru!"

Sorry, not helpful, I know.  My advice is buy some Benadryl, eat the chocolates and curl up on the couch to watch Better Off Dead!

"The heart of the truffle is honey with the natural perfume (could be just scent) of lavender, coated with fine dark chocolate."

It doesn't state anything about the actual content except that the center is honey and smells like lavender.  It may or may not contain lavender oil in it, it doesn't state specifically.

Thanks very much for your replies!
blue_bunny_paz - I think you're probably right! Darn, that's 1/3 the box gone :(
ccnumber4 - haha! That's so tempting lol...or at least it is if I understood correctly and Better Off Dead is a real TV programme...
Chartreuse - thanks for the translation :) I guess I will have to err on the side of caution.

Thanks and goodnight, all!

If the lables are anything like they are in the US, they may have a comprehensive list of ingredients.  If you look back there, it may shed further light on what's in it.

I'm glad to help out as much as I can.  I'd also happily help by eating your chocolates, but think that goes far beyond the call of duty.  ;)

Better Off Dead is a very funny American movie made in the mid 1980s. :)

Edited to add that the other poster undoubtedly mentioned it becasue the teenage boy in the movie meets and falls in love with a French girl.

Yep, Better Off Dead is a great 80s comedy, starring John Cusack.  The French food quote is from Lane's mother, who decides to serve a French meal for the foreign exchange student.  Sorry it was so obscure.

I hope you are able to eat the chocolates without an allergic reaction!

It may be that it is lavender honey, but from the way it is phrased, I suspect that something was added to make it smell like lavender so I would avoid eating it if I were you.

This is a great site to translate things: http://babelfish.altavista.com/

I put ur sentance in and it said pretty much what Chartruse said.  While the nuances that casue sentances to actually make sense sometimes get lost in translation, at the very least it helps get the major words and ideas out.

Haha thanks for clearing up my confusion CathyF and ccnumber4! I obviously missed out on that one :)
Chartreuse - well since I can't eat these ones, shall I package them up and mail them over to you?!
And thanks for the link, Rose. I will have to try that next time.
