I don't agree.  These are kids, and the author was trying to get across to her friend exactly what was wrong with what she was asking.  If the friend had simply been clueless, this would have been an excellent clue-by-four.  As it played out, the exchange was all recorded so the parents could further try to knock some sense into her.  Pity it didn't work.

Sigh ... I absolutely detest the phrase " Can you help me out ? " when it is used to borrow or bum money . A former friend used it constantly . It seemed to me that he was portraying himself as an innocent victim of circumstances beyond his control .

It's just such a dodgy way of putting it . Refusal implies that you are the sort of person who would not help a friend .

He stopped coming around after I told him " No , but you can help yourself . " and followed that up with a list of all the part time jobs available in our area .

Apparently , that was not the kind of "help" he was looking for .
