Tainted Love seems to bring out the best in some singers.

I love the original Gloria Jones version, but Marc Almond, Max Raabe and Marilyn Manson have all done great covers.

I was just going to post that the Soft Cell version is one of my favorite covers.

There are so many versions of You Belong To Me, but Jo Stafford gets to me every time.

Adele's cover of Make You Feel My Love is just gorgeous. Didn't even realise it was a Bob Dylan song when I heard it.

WolfWay, Duran's cover of "White Lines" was blistering live. The covers album, however? Let us never speak of it again.  ;)
I'll see if I can find a video of a live performance. Thanks for the heads up.  :D

I have a deep fondness for covers, and actually have accepted the awesomeness that is The Shat into my heart. "Common People" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Rocket Man" are, look, just special, okay?!

Placebo's cover of "Running Up that Hill" is perfection.

No Doubt's cover of "It's My Life," however, is not.
Oh lord, no, bad bad wrongly badness. <shudder>

Speaking of fantastic cover versions: Richard Cheese does some glorious covers of rock/metal/alternative/rap songs in a the style of a lounge singer and its fantastic! He turns "Gin n Juice" into a slow rambling spoken word contemplative poem. He also turn Papa Roach's "Last Resort"  and Linkin Parks "One step closer" into chirpy little piano lounge singer pieces.

Aerosmith's version of "Come Together" makes me cringe.  To quote DS2, "That's a *Beatles* song!"

Social Distortion does a really nice "Ring of Fire."

I so badly want to love that Social Distortion cover but it sounds like Elmer Fudd to me!  :P

My favorite cover is Rocket Man(tastic) by Maynard James Keenan (Tool/Puscifer) and Steven Drozd (the Flaming Lips). It is stunningly beautiful. There's no official video but you can youtube it for lots of fan vids.

Oh, I love this. Thank you for posting about it.

along these lines

A Perfect Circle's cover of "Imagine"
Perfect Circle's entire cover album "emotive" was excellent.

How could I forget?!

Children of Bodom (death metal band) do a great cover of Britney Spear's "Oops I did it again",

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K84j7CJIUKU

All Guns Full Ammo do a nice metal cover of the Ghostbuster's theme:

and in that vein, there's an entire album called something like "Abba goes metal" featuring heavy metal covers of Abba hits.

Linkin Park covered Adele's Rolling in the Deep. I think I might prefer their version.

Try this one. It's all about Warren. (And I'm not a Warren fan, but seriously.)

It really is lovely. I even like it better than the Billy Joel version and I'm a biiiiig Billy fan.

I love Metallica's cover of Turn the Page. Not fond of the original by Bob Seger though

Yes!! Their version is fantastic. I do like it better than the original.

Can't believe I almost forgot this one! Richard Thompson -- the amazing guitarist -- covering "Oops! I Did It Again" by Britney Spears. Hands down, it's one of the best and most unexpected covers ever. What that man can do with a pop song ...

It's from his CD called "1000 Years of Popular Music." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1000_Years_of_Popular_Music

My favorite cover of Oops! is by Max Raabe, a German big band singer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYr9kIyambE

He's actually done a bunch of pop covers with his orchestra. Super Trooper is another good one.

Speaking of metal covers of unexpected songs, there is a metal version of the bluegrass classic "Devil went down to Georgia" that's featured in Guitar Hero that is facemeltingly fast. I'm always gobsmacked someone can play guitar that fast.

I do not like Gladys Knight & the Pips version of "I Heard it Through the Grapevine".

I agree! But have you heard Michael McDonald's version? It's absolutely fantastic. The best version I've ever heard. (not that I am a rabid, crazy fan of his and his gorgeous snowy white hair or anything!  ;) )

ETA: Oh, how could I forget! Joan Osborne does a version of Heat Wave that is truly wonderful! Much better than previous versions, especially that terrible version by Linda Ronstadt. And I don't even like Joan Osborne, but I have to give credit where it's due. She owns that song!

I love the original Gloria Jones version, but Marc Almond, Max Raabe and Marilyn Manson have all done great covers.

Marc Almond and Jimmy Sommerville did an amazing version of "I Feel Love," too! And Adele's cover of The Cure's "Lovesong" was just WOW.

Oooh, that reminds me. Not really a cover, but if you haven't heard Jimmy's 2014 version of Smalltown Boy, go listen to it. It's amazing. Gave me goosebumps.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Now I'm in tears.
Thank you for posting that video, it's phenomenal! Except now I want to grab all my friend by their ears and go "You must listen to this! Now!"
