D Smith has passed on.

The make - up artist wingadingdingy Smith unfortunately  died today age 92.  He revolutionised the use of prosthetics, working on The Exorcist, Little Big Man and Amedeaus amongst many others.  A long life but a sad loss.

Given the word substitution, you might want to use an initial instead (however, I have to admit I laughed  :-[ )

Seriously?!  I thought we were grown-ups here.  That word filter is an insult.

I just opened a thread in the Glitches subforum concerning this matter.  If you're so inclined, go there and back me up.  Maybe the mods will have a change of heart.

The thread in Glitches has been locked already.

I was going to suggest that the filters be changed to substitute words with "censored". That's truthful and would let readers know that a word has been blocked.

Please. Have a bit of respect for eHellDame and the mods. They didn't substitute the word because of some over-prudishness. They substitute the word because Google AdSense (which funds this site) will serve up obscene ads if they don't.

But seriously, using wingadingdingy as the replacement?

This also doesn't explain why the initials O M G, when written without the spaces, is replaced with "Crudmonkeys!"

My guess is it's because it's mildly blasphemous (G*d).

If you want to circumvent the word filter in a situation like this (i.e. NOT because you're trying to post content you shouldn't, but just because a word can have two meanings), insert a tag in the middle of the word.  So "di [color = black]ck[/ color]" without the spaces gives you what you wanted in the first place, and won't trip the weird ads.

That doesn't work in thread titles; the coding shows up.

Personally I find the filter substitutions quite humorous!

I've even brought some of them to my real life. Like Crudmonkeys! ;D

PurpleFrog, your link isn't working right, probably due to the filters. If you copy and past the URL it connects properly.

Back to the thread -- What a career he had. Sometimes behind the scene people do the most important work yet nobody knows who they are. Thanks for enlightening me on his work.

Personally I find the filter substitutions quite humorous!

I find most of them insulting, this one in particular, as if people are giggling behind their keyboards at rude words like children. We're not children, and if Google is serving up inappropriate ads as a result of using totally normal words, perhaps it's time to look at an ad solution that's more suitable for the ethos of the forum, rather than censoring the membership with infantile phrases.
