I don't know what boggles me more …
« on: January 08, 2007, 11:05:41 PM »
… the incident, or what my mother said about it.

Mother had asked me a few days ago if I could go online to Harry & David's and order a gift basket for her friends Mae and Denny. They have been friends with Mother for over 30 years. They gave Mother $50 for Christmas, and Mother wanted to send something of almost equal value in return.

For various reasons, I didn't get a chance to order the gift basket this weekend. Now I'm glad I didn't.

Mother called today, and I told her I hadn't placed the order yet. Mother said, "I've changed my mind. I'm not sending them anything because of …" And she said, to my utter shock, "That dumb-a** Denny!"  :o

My mother has never, never, never called anyone a dumb-a**. I was turning purple to keep from laughing, but I managed to ask why she had changed her mind.

Denny had given Mae something for Christmas that did not fit her. He took her to Penney's so she could exchange it, but she couldn't find whatever it was in her size, so the cashier gave Mae a gift card.

Before Mae got two steps away from the service desk, Denny said, "Give me that."

Mae said, "No, it's mine."

Denny demanded, "Give me that card RIGHT NOW!"

Mae gave it to him and he took it to the men's department and bought himself two pair of pants.

Mother asked Mae why she handed over a gift card that was essentially her Christmas present. Mae said she didn't want to make a scene.

Mother was furious that Denny demanded the card and furious that Mae gave it to him. She was afraid Denny would get hold of the gift basket and not let Mae have any of what was in it, so she just decided not to send it.

I couldn't believe Mae let Denny have the card, either.

But I really couldn't believe Mother called Denny a dumb-a**.

(Just for the record, both Denny and Mae have always been a little strange.)

Go, Mom!  She should take Mae out for lunch instead.  Denny IS a dumba$$!

Sounds like Mae needs a nice set of lotion and perfume from your Mom.  I don't think Denny would be nearly interested in taking that away as he would the food basket.

How utterly appalling. Name calling isn't polite, but correct zoological identification is perfectly proper. I agree with your mother, Scritzy.

Oh, I completely agree that Denny is a dumb-a**, and he always has been. I just couldn't believe Mother used that word. LOL!

I wish Mother could take Mae out, but Mother doesn't drive and Mae can't drive anymore. (And frankly, Denny shouldn't be driving, either.)

Oh yes, they've been married forever. I agree, it is very strange behavior. Denny's always been a taco short of a combination platter.

And to think Mother tried to fix Sissie up with their son … as if our family isn't dysfunctional enough already!  ;)

Yep, I think Mae definitely should receive something very feminine that Denny wouldn't enjoy, and Denny deserves to have those pants shrunk in the dryer so that he experiences acute pain if he tries to wear them.  Denny is not only a dumb-a**, he's a Richard Cranium.

They gave Mother $50 for Christmas, and Mother wanted to send something of almost equal value in return.

Off the actual topic but, this is the bit I don't understand: Why would they give cash to your mother as a Christmas present? And then why would she want to buy them something with it? It would make more sense for them to just keep the money and buy what they want.

Scritzy, the only rude thing I see here is that your mother has implied that all donkeys are as selfish as Denny. I believe she owes an apology to donkeys everywhere for this vile comparison.

Now I know I need more sleep, because it actually took me a few minutes to work out what you were saying with the name.  I Love It!  Can I borrow it, pretty please?

Has your mom taken up watching South Park, maybe?  :D

...and, yeah, Denny does sound like a troglodyte. Had Mr. HGish demanded i hand him a gift card i had just gotten i would have thought it was because he wanted to do something nice(r). I would never have expected he was going to take it to get something for himself & maybe Mae didn't either.

My brother and I normally give each other money and he suggested we do the same this year, despite the fact that he's now living in London (I'm in Sydney) I told him what a stupid idea that was and just to buy something for himself. (I didn't tell him, but I gave my mum the equivilant of 50 quid for her to put in his account, as he is struggling and I'm currently not)
