The idea that wearing red means you slept with the groom is as ridiculous as the idea that brides wear white because they are virgins. Both are ridiculous concepts and any "tradition" that espouses either idea needs to be completely ignored, IMHO. Red is a perfectly lovely color (my personal favorite color, actually) and white wedding gowns, while lovely, have never meant the bride is virginal. It's only ever been a fashion choice. I don't know who comes up with these ridiculous rules.

What have you got? Is it food? Is it for me? I want it whatever it is!

My BM wore red, I remember a salesperson at a department store horrified when I told her, she thought I was going to wash out with all the red.

I wouldn't worry about wearing red to a Chinese wedding either. A traditional bride's dress will be of a particular style with ornate embroidery, so a Western-style dress would not be an issue.  In fact, red is considered to be a lucky colour, so it could be interpreted as wishing prosperity to the happy couple  :)

Unless it's a very traditional Chinese Wedding, there's no problem with guests wearing red jackets or blouses because the Bride usually wears white these days.  Of course, all the Chinese Weddings I've attended have been 'blended' affairs with only one member of the HC being Chinese.

Little black dresses are almost the uniform for Wedding guests around here.  It's thought that most of the guests in black makes the Bride stand out.  As long as you don't look like a Mediterranean widow of the eary 20th
century, black is perfectly fine.

I was raised with 3 rules:

No trying to look like you are the bride.  (simple white cocktail suit might be OK, big white ballgown - no)
No trying to look like you are in mourning (especially the MOG all in black because she was loosing a son)
No trying to look like you are "a lady of the evening" (addressed at one of my Aunts who always looked like she was on the prowl for her next ex)

It was style+color more than color alone that made the difference.

A simple red dress is fine. A red dress split to the hip or cut to the navel would be OTT.

It looks like a lovely dress, OP!

Of whom you speak,
And how, and when, and where.

Metallica Fan, that red dress is gorgeous, and I think it would be an excellent choice for a wedding.  You will look smashing in it.  What kind of shoes and accessories will you wear?

As for black, at least in my community, I think the only time you even need to think twice about black for a wedding would be for something like a woman's business suit or severe dress that looks like you are dressed for a solemn funeral.   Any black party outfit or LBD is fine, especially at night.  For daytime, I'd probably go with a colored accessory or two with a LBD, but for any occasion, not only weddings, just because that makes it less evening-y.

That is a nice dress.  Depending on the formality/time of day of the wedding, it would be fine. You could always add a wrap/jacket it to it.

Thanks gellchom!

The event was last night.  I wore strappy high heel sandals in a pearlized pewter color,  and carried a black lace clutch that had gold threads.  Long crystal drop earrings, dark silver manicure, bright red pedicure.  I wore my hair in a fancy side braid.   I know I stood out, a redhead in a red dress!
There was only one other woman in red.  Nearly everyone else wore black, including quite a few little girls.

We brought our camera, but the battery suddenly died before we could get any good pictures.   :(

Well, my question was answered last night, Lol
DH's cousin got married yesterday.  There were two young women wearing red dresses, both of the dresses were short, tight, and low cut.   So, I guess red isn't out for a wedding!  I think that I will wear my red lace dress to another wedding in the future.

Funereal black or all white would be wrong in the UK, but red would be fine.

Green, however, used to be a real no-no because it was considered unlucky. I think the superstition is dying out, but my SIL never wears green, and would have been horrified if anyone had worn it to their wedding.

I wonder how she felt when all my bridesmaids wore green velvet!

I would love a green dress, it would look great with my red hair!  :D

But not a real green dress, that's cruel. Name the reference.

I need to go shopping for a red dress!
