I agree that you really need to focus on neutral colors, preferably solid to ensure that you don't shift focus away from the wedding party.  Champagne is a color that works nicely outside during the warmer months.  Would you consider something along the lines of this dress?

In order I like your 1st , and second. The third looks well dumpy and I am certain you are lovely and the sheer panel on the fourth is distracting

I like this one in both tan and black.

I hadn't considered a lighter neutral color like that. I don't think the style of that particular outfit would suit me, but the color might. The search continues!

That's not bad, but the side slit is pretty high. I don't know that it would be a good choice for this event.

I think you should show these links to the HC and get their take on them.  It sounds like wearing something bland is not what they expect of you, so get a sense of what they like.

The one (informal, park) wedding I went to with a non-priest officiant, I don't remember what she wore.  I think that was kind of the point though - I definitely remember what the bride wore, even though it wasn't a traditional wedding dress (it was a lovely sage green ensemble.)

I don't think they will look bland.  And you can glam up for the reception with a great necklace or cocktail ring, fabulous shoes, and/or a cute bag.  [Super stylist Metallicafan, where are you? :)]  I wouldn't show them to the HC and ask for their input.  They have enough details to attend to, and anyway, you want to be able to use this dress in the future for other weddings you do.  Just pick something professional and appropriate and that you like and they will be fine with it.

I like the second one you found best, and third one might be okay, depending on how it looks on you.  The fourth one, with the beads and the see-through panel, not so much, and the first one is too dressy and lacy -- looks more like a mother of the bride dress, not professional enough.  And definitely not anything with a big slit up the side!  No matter how laid-back this wedding is, your role in it is a serious one.  Save anything va-va-va-voom for when you are a guest.

Are you sure you are supposed to wear an evening gown?  I'd check on that.  If so, those two would be perfect (the one with the belt maybe even if not; it doesn't appear to be a full-length gown), and I bet you'll look great at this wedding and get a lot of use out them in the future, too.

Generally speaking: A suit.  You are there in a professional capacity.

But you say these are friends, so I think there's some leeway assuming you are bith a guest and a professional.  I'd take cues from the couple.

But if you intent to do wedding work regularly and hope to gain referrals and recommendatiosn from other guests, I go the suit option anyway and change for the reception, to project that professional atmosphere as part of your self-marketing.

They said they prefer that I not wear a suit; too stuffy for their lighthearted wedding.

I really like the fourth one you linked to from Amazon. It doesn't seem like they'd want you to wear a plain black dress to their wedding, and that one has enough to make it a little less somber without being overwhelming.

If they liked the idea of the maxi dress, how about a maxi dress in a solid jewel-tone color, to stand out from the bridesmaids? Or one with two or three colors in color-block, not a print. Then get a jacket from the Pyramid Collection in a print or a snazzy color to wear over the dress when the reception starts.

I'm thinking something like these:

I'm kind of leaning toward the second one myself. It's not really an evening gown so much as a more casual maxi dress. I think it would serve the purpose well. It seems formal enough to make me look "official" while still being comfortable. (May outdoor wedding in the deept south; it could be HOT). I know I'll see the HC many times before the wedding so I will show it to them, but knowing them as I do, they'll just say that it's fine and to wear whatever I'm comfortable with.

I may or may not do more weddings in the future; I didn't seek it out. They knew I was a notary and asked me to do it. I'm not charging them. Performing the ceremony is my gift to them. This will actually be my sixth wedding. Two were family and very informal (jeans, on the beach), one was in a bar (don't ask...), one was simply signing off on the license in my office, and one in an art gallery (the owners were marrying each other; they both are close friends of ours. It was just the four of us and we were all dressed casually). So, this wedding will be the first one for me that will have all the traditional trappings of a wedding; an aisle, a bride in an actual gown, music, the whole shebang. If I am asked to to more weddings in the future I'll take those on a case-by-case basis when deciding what to wear depending upon what the couple prefers.

I do like the 5th one that you listed. That is going to be a contender!
