Question about thank-you card
« on: January 09, 2007, 09:12:33 AM »
The faculty at my school got me a beautiful potted plant (lily of the valley, I believe) in sympathy for my dad's recent death.  The card was signed "From (school) staff."  How should I go about the thank-you note(s)?  I was thinking of hand-writing a card to the staff and giving it to the head of the committee, and leave it up to her to post it, but I could also send out an e-mail to the distribution list thanking them all.  Should I do both, or just one?  I'm not sure.

The usual form at my university for this sort of thing is to write a thank you card "to everyone", and pin it on the main faculty notice board. I don't know if that is "correct" though.

Do you know the usual procedure for sympathy cards, etc, at your school?  If it's standard procedure that the cost is paid by the business (as at my old job, with the card from "Your coworkers at XXX company"), then I'd just send the card to be posted.

If it's usual to collect money and/or have everyone sign the sympathy card individually, you could send an e-mail if you liked - but I don't think it's necessary.  Certainly I'd think that no one will judge you for not doing it.

I was so focused on answering the question that I forgot to say - I'm so sorry for your loss, Deb.

I like the email idea.

Writing one note and posting it on the board in our lunchroom is the way our company generally does it.  At our company though, the flowers are purchased by the company and not with donations from everyone.

If we get a gift from a group, we write a thank you card.  We then put that card in an envelope, and make a list of all the people the card should be routed to.  People read the card, cross off their name, and then pass it to somebody else on the list.
