I do agree that spending years in college, with no degree to show for it, would likely be a waste. But, if he's not quite sure what he wants to do long-term, there are worse degrees to get than math, which as many people here have pointed out is pretty versatile. And, a lot of jobs require a four-year degree--any degree, as greencat said--or put an employee with a four-year degree in a higher category than one without a four-year degree. So while of course you'd like him to pursue something he's passionate about, if he's not sure what that is yet, successfully completing any degree is way better than not.

A friend of mine had worked at a company for several years, while they paid for him to complete his four-year degree, a couple classes at a time. People who had worked there less time, who had less experience, with four-year degrees in completely unrelated fields, came in earning more than he did, simply because they possessed a degree. Which may seem unfair, but it's not the fault of the people with the degrees, it's just company policy, and a fairly common one.
