Would I be an overdressed guest?
« on: July 01, 2015, 01:58:09 AM »
My awesome niece and her sweetie are getting married at sunset at an outdoor beachside wedding site in Hawaii in a few months. It's a small destination wedding and I'm honored to have been asked. She's wearing a beautiful formal gown. I don't know what her FH is wearing. After the wedding, we'll be having dinner at a really elegant restaurant (I've been there before; they have a dress code, which is pretty rare in Honolulu  :D ).

So, I found the best. dress. ever. online: (I'm sorry, I don't know how to shorten the link!)

http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/style-co.-water-printed-blouson-maxi-dress?ID=2170032&CategoryID=5449&tdp=cm_app~zMCOM-NAVAPP~xcm_zone~zPDP_ZONE_A~xcm_choiceId~zcidA40011-32bd1ee1-57df-44ce-ac88-c7d97e6fae36%40H7%40Customers%20Also%20Shopped%245449%242170032~xcm_srcCatID~z5449~xcm_pos~zPos1

It's so inexpensive, I'm guessing it's not a very high-end fabric. But is the print too show-offy? Most weddings I've been to, I've dressed very conservatively out of necessity, not preference. This one is special for a lot of reasons. I just don't want to commit a faux pas. I told my sister about an earlier dress, that was also long, and she wasn't sure long was appropriate (but, really, I don't have the world's best legs, and I wouldn't mind covering them up if it's ok). Opinions?

To me, that's not a particularly 'dressy' dress. I would call it fairly casual.

Which would be fine for a beachside wedding, I would think, but I can't imagine anyone thinking you were overdressed.

Definitely not over-dressed - I agree with CakeEater, it's actually quite a casual dress, definitely appropriate for a beach wedding.

I think the potential is more would it be too much of a "stand out" e.g. draw too much attention.   It is nice and unique and quite a cool pattern.  I think it would be fine though, the colours blend in so it won't jump out too much in photos etc.  It stands out without being over the top or drawing attention away - everybody will definitely be looking at the lady in the big white dress!    :)

I think it is lovely, very appropriate for a guest at a beach wedding, and not overdressed at all.

it's beautiful, not too dressy IMHO, and looks perfect for a beach wedding.

Your sister's remark about the dress being 'long' isn't relevant, i think. it's not a 'long' dress as in 'a formal gown', it's 'long' as in 'maxi dress' which is very much in style now.

(read the reviews, btw, looks like it runs large)

I want that dress!  And I agree - it is not at all too dressy, and I think very appropriate for a beach wedding.

Breezy enough for a beach wedding in Hawaii, yet nice enough for a restaurant with a dress code.

What a beautiful dress. Perfect for a beach wedding. You will match the ocean!

I don't think it looks casual. It actually looks dressy to me, appropriate for an outdoor wedding. The fabric has a silky look.
