More "child" folders?
« on: December 05, 2006, 01:42:12 PM »
I have the option of creating sub folders or what SMF refers to as "child" folders.   It seems to me the Coffee Break folder could be divided into specific folders like "Entertainment",  "Books", "Well Wishes", etc.

Any thoughts?

Can we divide the family section into children, in laws, parents, siblings, etc? I think that Humor Me could be a child folder under coffee break....just thoughts.
I have finally found the bar I can't get thrown out of....

Also, how about a child folder in "Life... in General" to put stories about good etiquette that we see? Or is that too redundant?

I like that idea. I'll be honest - there are some discussions that I'm not interested in and would like to be able to bypass whole sections instead of having to put certain threads on "ignore".

When I first read the title, I thought "oh-oh now we're gonna get into the debate that Ehell has become all about the chillllllldren now"  ;)

We tend to have a lot of posts about pets (how cute they are, how they're doing) so I think a "child" folder there could be very useful.

I'd also like to suggest possibly having one to make personal announcements or requests for good thoughts/prayers, since we have lots of posts along those lines too.

You read my mind. I was just about to suggest a folder for animals/pets.

Does the "I Need A hug" sub folder fit the bill?

Also, a pets sub folder in what category?

The "I need a hug" title sounds good to me, although the folder could also be the place to announce good news, like getting engaged, a new baby, a new job, moving, and so on.

I'd put the pets "child" folder in Life in General (although I could see it in Family and Children too, because many pet owners consider their pets family members  ;) ).

Is there a way to see the threads without so much jumping around?  I loved the old one because I could be reading, but looking at what I was going to read next.  Do I just have to set my settings differently? If that's not an option I don't know if I would like that many folder I have to check out constantly to make sure I'm not missing anything.  I love it all and really don't care about it being organized, just easy to find everything.

When you open a main folder (or what this forum software calls a "board"), you should see a list of all the threads within that folder/board.  The only difference from the previous forum to this one is that it seems you can only view one board's threads at a time.  You do have the option of collapsing or expanding a main folder/board but not within a folder/board.   So, if you never wanted to read anything from the wedding board, you would collapse it by clicking on the button on the top right of the board.

Sorry.  It's hard for me to learn to navigate as well but all in all, it actually is more efficiently organized and has more features.

wha about a Venting folder? We seem to have a lot of those and they always start off with "I know this isnt etiquette related, but..." Sometimes I like to read them, but I prefer to stick to etiquette issues, and would like to know if I am getting into a vent or not right off the bat.

Can anyone start these folders or does it have to be Admin?

Btw, if you expand the box just below the "Hello MadMadge43" at the top left of the page, you'll see the option to "Show unread posts since last visit" which when clicked, will display all those posts in a neat and orderly list so you can see them all at one time.

Expand this box by clicking on the box at the far right of the welcome to you.  It has either a + or - sign in it.

I think one of the biggest problems we had with the original Ehell forum was that there were too many venting and ranting posts.

People often didn't respond to those posts as the original posters hoped...there ended up being a lot of hostility because a lot of times the OPs wanted validation of their own behavior that in fact was quite rude, or wanted the other members to condemn as rude behavior that really wasn't.

There is a forum on Delphooey called Kvetch Corner that replaced the Boiler Room (venting) section of the original Ehell forum.

I was wondering how other people would feel about creating "child folders" for the series type stories, i.e. HOA, Serenity, etc.  I created a poll about it in the coffee break folders, well the poll indirectly correlates.  Would that be a preferred way to share these stories with EHellions, without running over into the etiquette areas?
