I.hate.LOST.
I can't stand that show. I never liked it from day one, for many of the reasons that critics are whining about now. Other things on my list include Dave Matthews, Grease, and Malcolm in the Middle.
Above all, I can't stand people who only watch movies or shows because they're critically acclaimed. You all know them, the movie/TV snobs that feel they need to intellectualize EVERYTHING and think that being pretentious is cool. I actually had to tell a friend to (Oo, I just used a rude phrase that the moderators won't be happy about. ) when he went on for hours, then days, about how I liked "Armaggedon". Yeah, that movie with Liv Tyler and Ben Affleck and the Aerosmith song. So what if I like it? Michael Bay movies are fun because they're mindless and have lots of explosions. This friend, and some others, are the same people who are convinced that I like Lost because... who can possibly not like it? Oy vay.
Sorry, I digress...
I am a HUGE, avid Lost fan, but I don't begrudge anyone for not liking it. Different strokes for different folks. I've had sooo many people tell me that I should watch Grey's Anatomy, but from what I have seen and read, I know I wouldn't like it. It looks very annoying and stupid, with idiot characters. And last weekend I rented 'Snakes on a Plane'. I usually don't like trashy movies and consider myself one of those intellectual good-movie snobs, but I've always had this thing for those creature-feature movies. I'll admit I watch the ones on the Sci-Fi channel a lot.
The friends who can't accept the idea of anyone disliking Lost? They're the same people who lecture me frequently on liking
Grey's Anatomy. The person who does that the most? She hasn't seen it. Not a single episode. I watched half of the first season of Lost before giving up on it. Therefore, I feel like I can at least say, "I watched it, I tried to enjoy it, but I just didn't." Not watching a show and giving me crap about watching it? Not cool. She also frequently rants on how she doesn't like Star Trek. I just roll my eyes until she literally throws a fit in my apartment where I'm watching it and demands that I change the channel. She could also leave, but that's not really something she's capable of conceiving. Yet, she's constantly bringing her Lost DVDs and saying, "Oh, let's all watch Lost!" Argh.
I enjoy the critically acclaimed stuff (although I thought Brokeback Mountain was just another love story... a good story, but certainly not worth the hype it received), but I also enjoy things that are fun and mass-produced. Yet, I receive constant badgering about it. I've gotten so defensive about it that when I once said I was going to be watching Grey's Anatomy, I prefaced it with, "If you don't like it, I do not care. Just keep it to yourself." The person I was speaking to raised his eyebrows and looked really surprised. Yet, he's the same person I told to (Oo, I just used a rude phrase that the moderators won't be happy about. ) about the Armaggedon bit and he was surprised that I frankly didn't want to hear it from him anymore.
There's enjoying good movies, having preferences/opinions, and there's being an absolute jerk about it. As you can probably tell, I'm pretty tired of the ones I'm surrounded by.
