Cell Phone in Public Bathroom??
« on: January 09, 2007, 06:42:14 PM »
So today I go into use the public bathroom at the college I'm currently attending.  When I entered this girl a few stalls over had her phone start ringing and she actually answered in the bathroom!  How tacky right?  But she didn't just make it quick she hangs out in the bathroom while myself and another girl are in there "trying" to use the restroom.  Apparently she didn't realize this was a TOTAL invasion of privacy.  And to top it off...she left without washing her hands!

That's only slightly better than being in a stall and listening to the woman in the next stall tell someone at home how to cook the roast for dinner.

I couldn't leave fast enough.  People, bathrooms are not places to take calls!  EEEW

Unless she was taking a call from her transplant surgeon saying "Your new heart is here!" I think this is really too weird for most people.

Yeaaaah.... when I lived in the dorms there was a girl on the floor who ALWAYS did this. I just don't understand, either hang up or hold it in.  I would be grossed out if I was the person on the other end too - can you imagine suddenly hearing a toilet flush?

And I never understand how people can go with out washing their hands in general - but ESPECIALLY in a public bathroom where everyone can see how gross they were being!!

If someone was talking to me from their toilet-stall-slash-office, I'd be *glad* if what I heard was a toilet flushing!! :)

People at my college do this too - I would hope the person on the other end is a friend, because I don't think a boss would find the sound of urine dribbling into the toilet very appealing. I know I've talked to my friend on the phone while he was doing his business in the bathroom and I got a kick out of it, but I couldn't imagine doing such in a public restroom. Imagine having the runs and talking to someone  ;D

I did this once recently, but there were extenuating circumstances.  My mom had been out of touch for over 4 hours, and she didn't know that the doctor had scheduled the surgery for Gran's biopsy. (See for Gran thread in I Need a Hug for details).  Anyway, it was a single person restroom, and I was just so glad that mom was ok I answered it without thinking about the fact that I was actually IN the bathroom.  But, she understood.

As for in public where other people could hear...... Wow, just wow.

I brought up a similar instance on another thread, and I was told by people on this forum that the person on the phone was not rude to me, though they were possibly rude to the person that they were on the phone with.  Further, I was told that the fact that I found it difficult if not impossible to go to the toilet with someone talking on the phone next to me was my problem, not hers.

The bathroom here in the library at school is right at the end of the study carralls. A lot of people will duck in there to take phone calls so they don't disturb those of us studying. The problem? You can hear everything in the bathroom clearly, so it really doesn't work. Plus, you're in a bathroom on the phone. That's just weird.
I have finally found the bar I can't get thrown out of....

If that happens again, moan loudly and scream, "Oh my God, it's crowning!". You'll know she isn't oblivious if she gets the picture and hangs up. :)

I think it's horribly disgusting, but I don't see it as an invasion of privacy. A public bathroom is just that, public. If she was in the stall with you then it's a privacy issue, but otherwise I don't see it like that.

I've mentioned this in a previous thread.  I've reported people on their cells at my office restroom.  I work for a hoity-toity financial services company.  Our clients are, obviously, allowed to use the restroom.  They really shouldn't have to hear the janitor barking into the phone loudly enough to be heard down the hall!  I've reported it once and the property manager of the office reports it everytime she sees it.  I work in a 32 floor high rise.  My company is only on four floors.  There are 28 other floors, some of which have individual handicap facilities (for greater privacy).  There are lunch rooms, conference rooms, stairwells and loading docks.  Plenty of places to take important, time sensitive calls.

Confession: I pretty much had to answer my phone in the rr recently.  I had been playing phone tag and my insurance agent finally called so I simply asked them to hold for a moment as I made my way out.

How exactly are we supposed to guess when we will get an important call?  My brother's basement was flooding and I told him to call me if he needed help.  My cell phone doesn't have voice mail.  I was in the bathroom and saw my brother was calling and I answered it.  One of the "ladies" who works down the hall in a different department complained to our department that it was "unprofessional" for me to answer a call in the bathroom.   Pity my psychic link with my brother is not working so I couldn't tell him when to call! ;)

OK LAT, you could not have let the call go to voice mail and called him back the moment you left the rest room? Seriously? Since you knew he might call about the flooding basement you could even have left your cell with a coworker to answer while you took care of your personal needs.

I completely agree with you coworker and if I was a client using the restroom when it happened. I might seriously rethink using the company's services if that kind of thing happened more than once.
