Absolutely insane. Run far, far away, and write the manager or owner AND the stylist about how you will not be coming back EVER because of their rude treatment of you and their insinuations about their behavior.

I think she fired YOU! Sometimes companies put in ridiculous procedures to weed out clients that are no longer profitable for them, but I can't for the life of me imagine what you would have done, and how $180 is not profitable with what you get done. I mean even in LA $180 for a haircut and highlight is standard, mine is $200 and then have to tip $40, which just kills me, and the reason I now wait till I get home to Tucson.

I have this weird thing where I always want my hairdressers to like me, it's so lame and I always feel a huge amount of anxiety before I go to one. The other side of me says they're doing a service for ME and I shouldn't feel the need to entertain them, but I still do.

So this would completely throw me for a loop, but would also make me so mad that I wouldn't go back. And I don't think you should either.

I am in central Virginia, this charge seems excessive to me. i don't know what the going rate is in your part of the country. I would try a less expensive, less "uppity" place. there must be plenty of salon owners or stylists who would be happy to have your business.

I also think they are charging you too much to begin with, unless the cost of living is much higher in Baton Rouge than my estimate. I would call around to 3 or 4 other salons and get quotes to see if your stylist's price is even fair. In my opinion she was really rude to you about this deposit and "history" thing. It almost sounds like she is confusing you with another client. At any rate, if one of the other salons you call sounds reasonable I would switch. I would also call the old stylist and tell her (politely, of course) exactly why she lost a client.

I know this is Oklahoma and is probably different but my friend had her hair cut, colored and highlighted last year and it was only like $80.  Which to me is still a lot of money but I would never pay $180 to get my hair done.

My daughters appointment is this thursday and mine is next thrusday. I was thinking I might go to her appointment and ask her about what is going on and if i dont like the answer is I'll cancel mine. at least hers is only $15.

I usually spend about $80 when i get my colored. cut , styled and my eyebrows waxed.

I would definitely find another stylist if I ever had to put a deposit down especially if I was regular.  It seems that they are not interested in your business.

I get my hair cut, colored and highlighted and its $130 plus her rates went up in January of last year but she never charges me more than what I started at.  I think she's worth every penny because the last time I went in, I told her I didnt' care what she did, I just needed a change.  I ended up with the absolute best color and cut for my face and skin and I can wear it so many different ways and I can go for 3-4 months between visits.

so i looked around and yes i'm basically getting screwed over price wise. ahh! She's was such a good stylist, like the first time, but i noticed that she's stopped kind of caring and she's screwed up a few times... I dunno I hate changing

Is this some new salon strategy we all need to know about??? I just called to make an appointment with a new stylist I had planned to see in October, then had to cancel because I needed to travel last minute, due to a death in the family. I gave her 4 days' notice when I cancelled, btw. I just called to make a new appointment and she demanded a deposit for the full price of the cut (excluding highlights). When I asked her what the cancellation policy is with such a deposit, she very snippily said, "Why do you foresee needing to cancel AGAIN?" Seeing as I only cancelled out of absolute necessity (a death, for pete's sake!), and with 4 days' notice, I think her attitude is laughable. Good luck to her.

Bottom line: I won't be a new client for her. I made a consultation appointment with another salon.

That's pretty amazing, Gemini!  I don't understand the attitude at all.  It wasn't as though you just blew off the appointment!  And even if you DID...requiring a "deposit?"

I think you were right to book a consult elsewhere.  Even if you had made the "deposit," how could you be certain that this stylist wouldn't do something to screw up your hair, out of spite, so that you would be dissatisfied and not come back anyway?

This person obviously has and exaggerated sense of their own entertainment value!

heck, i live in Northern Virginia, in the DC metro area, and i don't pay ANYTHING like $180 for a cut/color/style, i pay less than half each month (my hair grows fast, have to get the roots touched up each month).  and my hair looks really great, unless I have to style it!  Mondrian, look for someone else.  you are not only getting screwed, you are totally unappreciated by your stylist.  especially if you and your daughter are both clients!

So I went today to get my daughters hair cut and she seemed nice as usual. I have no clue what is going on. I'm not putting the deposit down that's for sure. What I am going to do is go next thursday, get my hair done, get the name and number of the colors she uses (like i said typically she does my hair perfect) and a cut then have my fiance take about a hundred pictures of it and find a new stylist!

Mondrian, be prepared for her not to tell you what's in the color formula.  You "may" get the names of the colors and what brand they are.  But I can almost put money on the fact that she won't share her proportions of which, with you.

However, if you can compliment her by saying how many people compliment your color and ask what kind it is and the names of the colors, she may tell you that much.

I happen to know my stylist uses Redken - Shades EQ, and I always tell him to do whatever he wants...and then ask what colors are in the "mix" this time.  He usually tells me.  But I don't push for proportions.

If you know the brand and the name(s) of the colors, then your next stylist will probably be able to come close...if not exact...to the color formula you're used to having.
