May I have a different table, please?
« on: January 09, 2007, 07:45:59 PM »
The personal space bubble reminded me of this.  Does anyone have to sit in a certain place in a restaurant in order to be comfortable?  I do.  I need to have my back to the wall, to be facing the room and preferably facing the door.  I don't feel comfortable in the middle of the room or with my back to the room or to the door.
I've never knitted anything I could recognize when it was finished.  Actually, I've never finished anything, much to my family's relief.

I don't mind being in the middle of the room, but I want to be facing the door.  Don't you dare put me near the kitchen or the restroom doors.

Also, for rather obvious reasons, don't put me near the entrance.

If the resteraunt has them, I definelty prefere booths, but sometimes at some places the booths are annoying becasue the space between the table and the booth seat is too big for some reason and you can't really do anything about that when the seat is bolted to the floor, so in situations like that I prefer to request regular table with a normal chair.  I could never understand why they want diners to have to sit on the edge of their seat or reach across the table! If I sat all the way with my back to my seat, I would probably drop the food on my lap by the time I reach my arm to the table and back to my mouth. I always thought that was really strange.

(Edited becasue I can't formulate a sentance tonight apparently...)

I don't like booths because I'm less than average height and the seats feel too low to me.  That's just as bad as the fact that the seat also feels too close to the table for comfort.

There is a restaurant near us that has great food, but has a bunch of two seater tables with only about a foot in between them, which is awkard because the people next to you can hear everything, and vice versa.  I hate sitting at those little tables, so we try not to go on Fridays or Saturdays when the restaurant is most crowded.  I also don't like when the tables are so close that the waiters or waitresses have to squeeze through and I feel like I'm constantly ducking or moving out of the way.

two seater tables with only about a foot in between them,

I hate this, too.  I have been wondering what this says about the establishment.  Are they looking to fit as many tables as possible in the place or are they looking to limit their clientele to people who are size 0?  It's just as bad as places who play loud music meant for 20-somethings.

I remember an Encyclopedia Brown mystery where it was solved by his side-kick Sally because of a similar question.
A man was disguised as a woman and they had to find which one in a restaurant.  Turns out, a woman in supposed to see and be seen, and thus be facing the front.  The man is "the protector" and will be closer to doors.  The "woman" was seated in a man's position.
I know, it never made sense to me either, because I could think of so many arrangements!  But Sally solved it because she knew manners and Encyclopedia Brown did not.
I like to sit with my back to the wall if possible, and not be "trapped." But I will sit just about anywhere if the food is good and the price right!  :)

I think that the booths are arranged that way because of the Ahem.....expanding size of the averge person. ( and I am one of them, but the table is still too far away from the chair.)

And why do they think that you want to sit with your chin 2 inches from the table -- are they afraid that we can't find our mouths?

It really makes me feel less weird to hear how many of us prefer to sit with our backs to the wall. When I was first dating my husband and I asked to sit facing the door, he said, "What, are you in the mob?" He's used to me now.

I've heard it called the gunfighter' or gunslinger's seat.  I don't know what it is, but the feeling of uneasiness is palpable to me.  I've thought to myself that I should get over it and make myself sit in any seat and not be quirky about it, but then I think, "Why should I?  I'm not hurting anyone and wouldn't be comfortable."

I like booths except that they are usually too skimpy, space-wise.  There are a couple of places where the booths are more generous but I avoid them too, because you never know.  I like them if the tables are not bolted down, then I can scoot the table out a little bit so I feel more comfy.
