Wines/Champagne That Age Well
(1/1)

Hello!
I've barely posted on the new forum due to crazy exams and Christmas holidays, but I'm back now!! I have a question for the hellions. ;)
Sweetie and I are trying to cut back on needless spending so for Valentines day I suggested that we just get a reasonably priced wine/champagne from 2005 (the year we met) and let it age until our 25th (I know, its a long time from now but we're sentimental enough to do it). Here is the thing, do all wines keep for that long and age well? Are there any types I should avoid? Any brand/type suggestions?
Thanks!!! :)

Sparkling wine (such as spumante, which many people choose instead of champagne) does NOT age well at all. You don't want to save that for 25 years.
I'd say your best bet is to go to a wine shop rather than a grocery store or liquor store. Ask someone there for recommendations and explain what it is you want to do. Some wines will not age very well.

I second Cathy's idea.
You can also check wine magazines like Wine Spectator for recommendations. I also think magazines like Bon Apetit and Gourmet often feature columns on what wines are new, well rated, likely to age well etc.
Before you buy a bottle to cellar this way be sure to buy a bottle to taste, or visit a good wine shop where they offer samples. I've had wine that was rated highly that I didn't actually like the taste of. Wine also can react negatively to changes in temperature and other factors and even fine ones can deteriorate if not stored properly, so get some advice about how to store it.
