I am a big believer in trusting my instincts, mostly because I tended to ignore red flags earlier in my life and that always led to disastrous results.  I learned the hard way to trust my instincts.  Could I be wrong sometimes?  Of course, but that's ok because the consequence of NOT being friends with someone who gives me a bad vibe and turns out to be totally fine is.....nothing.  I don't have to be friends with everyone.  So if someone gives me a bad vibe I'm not going to pursue a friendship with them.  I'm ok with being wrong sometimes if it means I avoid the baddies that I'm right about.
