You're doing what to our cubes?
« on: January 13, 2007, 04:23:56 PM »
So my company redid my building and built a new one and during the construction moved eight of us to a location very far from home at our expense.  The awful driving is almost over and last week we went back to our old site to look around at our new space.  Now in the new building everyone has their own cube or office.  Scientists have offices and RAs have cubes.  Nice ones I might add.

Before I left I was sharing a nice size cube with a nice woman.  During my exile time I had my own cube and while it is really small, it is my own.  So I went back to my old double cube.  And there is a hierarchy to cubes.  Principles get their own, seniors get to share, and entry level got to share a long desk with no privacy or storage space and it was just awful.

So we get back and the long desk is still there, presumably for interns.  And all double cubes are missing the middle file cabinet and in its place is a third phone for the cube.  SO if I have this right in the new building a person at my level gets her own cube.  But in my space it's a triple?!?!

So I asked my boss and his boss and they assumed it was a mistake and brushed it off.  The cube is not big enough for three people nor will I be able to get any work done.  I"m supposed to talk to the guy in charge of planning, but as far as my boss is concerned, he doesn't care.  He has his office back.

I choose jobs based on many things and work space is one of them.  I have been exiled for nine months with no move date in site, it was supposed to be six, and now I am supposed to pack up everything on my own, unpack and still run experiments all the while being happy about a substandard work space!  Is there a way to communicate this?  At this point it's not about the job title, but trying to find a quiet place to get my work done.

I guess you could take it up with HR that you don't have enough space to reasonably do your work and let them know how much you need.

If I were you, I'd also consider looking for a new job in case they are not supportive.  At a former job, I kept getting crammed into ever smaller spaces up to my last day there.
I'm away from sanity right now...please leave a message after the beep.

I know that the situation itself is not funny, but I could not help but think of the character in the movie "Office Space" whose desk keeps getting moved to more and more undesirable locations until he ends up in some storage room.  It turns out that he had been fired a long time ago, but a glitch in the payroll department let him continue to receive checks.  Rather than tell him this, management fixes the glitch and figures that he will eventually leave.
